How to easily hack IP cameras:
1. Vulnerability Overview
CVE ID: CVE-2017-7921
Affected products: Hikvision IP cameras and NVRs (2016 and earlier firmware)
Vulnerability type: Information disclosure / Authentication backdoor
Primary impact: Unauthorized access to credentials and administrator configuration
Patch date: 2017 (Official Hikvision update)
Attack vector: Default authentication bypassed via Base64-encoded parameter
2. Recognition and Detection
Using the audit platform
Shodan / Census IoT: Search engines specializing in indexing exposed network devices.
Search filter (conceptual example)
Note: The filter targeting the year 2016 helps identify unupdated firmware versions predating the patch release.
3. Verification mechanism (diagnostic PoC)
The vulnerability lies in a user management request that processes a pre-encoded authentication parameter.
Manual vulnerability test (PowerShell / Terminal)
Note: The parameter auth=YWRtaW46MTEK corresponds to the string admin:11 encoded in Base64 (a known backdoor).
Response structure in the event of a vulnerability (HTTP 200 OK)
Indicator: The server returns the XML list of users without requiring prior valid authentication.
4. Extraction and analysis of secret identifiers
Automated penetration testing scripts (CVE-2017-7921.py) make it possible to check for the presence of this vulnerability on the camera.
