Five common methods include:
- Phishing and Smishing: Cybercriminals use deceptive emails, texts, or fake websites that impersonate trusted brands or banks to trick you into voluntarily handing over your card details.
- Digital Skimming (Magecart): Hackers inject malicious code into the checkout pages of legitimate online stores. This code secretly copies your credit card information the moment you type it into the payment form.
- Physical Skimming Devices: Criminals attach hidden, unauthorized card readers and cameras to ATMs, gas pumps, or point-of-sale terminals to secretly swipe magnetic stripe data and record your PIN.
- Malware and Keyloggers: Malicious software is covertly installed on a victim's computer or phone. Keyloggers record every keystroke made on the device, capturing card numbers and passwords as they are typed.
- Data Breaches: Hackers exploit security vulnerabilities in large organizations or retailers to gain access to central databases, subsequently stealing the massive batches of customer credit card numbers stored there
